In a seismic move for the tech industry, Google LLC announced on Tuesday, March 18, that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire New York-based cybersecurity firm Wiz Inc. for a staggering $32 billion in cash. The deal, confirmed via an official statement, marks Google’s largest acquisition to date and signals a bold push into the booming cloud security sector.

The acquisition will see Wiz integrated into Google Cloud, with the tech titan aiming to bolster its defenses against rising cyber threats while capitalizing on the growing demand for multicloud solutions. “This acquisition represents an investment by Google Cloud to accelerate two large and growing trends in the AI era: improved cloud security and the ability to use multiple clouds,” Google stated.
The announcement sent ripples through Wall Street, with shares of Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., edging up 0.07% to $164.34 in pre-market trading on the Nasdaq Composite as of 9:12 a.m. EDT, slightly above the previous close of $164.29.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai hailed the deal as a game-changer for cloud computing. “From its earliest days, Google’s strong security focus has made us a leader in keeping people safe online. Today, businesses and governments that run in the cloud are looking for even stronger security solutions and greater choice in cloud computing providers. Together, Google Cloud and Wiz will turbocharge improved cloud security and the ability to use multiple clouds,” Pichai said.
Wiz, known for its cutting-edge cybersecurity tools, will play a pivotal role in safeguarding Google’s sprawling cloud business from foreign threats while driving innovation through Google’s vast resources. The partnership is also expected to enhance the design, operation, and automation of security services, delivering a comprehensive, AI-powered platform to customers worldwide.
“The increased role of AI and adoption of cloud services have dramatically changed the security landscape, making cybersecurity increasingly important in defending against emergent risks and protecting national security,” Google emphasized.
Notably, Wiz’s products will remain interoperable with all major cloud platforms—including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud—ensuring continuity for its existing customers post-acquisition.
The deal comes after months of speculation. According to a Reuters report, Google initially offered $23 billion for Wiz in 2024, only for antitrust concerns to stall negotiations. The final $32 billion price tag underscores Google’s determination to secure the firm and cement its dominance in the cloud and AI arenas.
As the tech world digests this blockbuster acquisition, all eyes are on how Google and Wiz will reshape the future of cloud security in an increasingly digital and AI-driven age. More details are expected as the deal progresses toward closure.
