New York, September 8, 2024 — Jannik Sinner, the top-seeded Italian, is set to face off against American Taylor Fritz in the highly anticipated men’s singles final of the 2024 US Open. The clash will unfold at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with the match scheduled to start at 2 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT). Al Jazeera will provide live coverage from 15:00 GMT.

Sinner, who has enjoyed a stellar year with a breakthrough victory at the Australian Open and a win at the Cincinnati Masters, will be up against Fritz, the 12th seed. This match represents a pivotal moment for Fritz, who is aiming to become the first American man to claim a Grand Slam title since Andy Roddick's victory at the US Open in 2003.
American men have dominated tennis for decades, with legends such as Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Jim Courier, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi amassing 41 Grand Slam titles from the 1970s to the early 2000s. However, the drought of US men’s Grand Slam titles has now extended to 82 consecutive tournaments.
As Fritz steps onto the court, he will be buoyed by the support of a fervent home crowd eager to break this lengthy dry spell. “I’ve always enjoyed playing him [Sinner],” Fritz remarked, reflecting on his upcoming challenge. The American has shown impressive form throughout the tournament, defeating former finalists Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev before overcoming Frances Tiafoe in the all-American semifinal.
Sinner, who has been the dominant force on hard courts this year with a remarkable 34-2 win-loss record, has been dealing with a wrist issue following a fall during his semifinal match. Despite the minor injury scare, Sinner is optimistic about his readiness for the final. “The physio loosened it up very fast on court, so after I felt OK in the beginning,” Sinner explained.
Fritz, known for his powerful serve and a tournament-leading 75 aces, is confident about his chances. “I have a feeling I’m going to come out and play really well and win,” he asserted.
As the US Open approaches its climax, all eyes will be on Arthur Ashe Stadium to see whether Fritz can end the American men's Grand Slam drought or if Sinner will continue his exceptional season with another major title.
